The Municipality of Chatham-Kent says it is closely monitoring the current provincial road salt shortage and remains in a stable position heading into the remainder of the winter season.
Municipal officials said Public Works is not facing any immediate concerns with local salt inventory and continues to work proactively with its salt supplier and contractor partners to ensure adequate supply is maintained. The municipality said this coordination allows crews to respond effectively to winter weather events while prioritizing road safety across both urban and rural areas.
Public Works also noted that road salt becomes significantly less effective at temperatures below –9 C and is ineffective at temperatures below –21 C, requiring crews to rely more heavily on plowing and to use salt strategically during periods of extreme cold.
Residents are reminded that Chatham-Kent offers an online Snowplow Tracker that allows the public to view snowplow activity across the municipality in real time. The tool is intended to provide transparency around winter maintenance operations and help residents understand when roads in their area have been serviced.
