Emergency crews responded to a structure fire at a home on Charing Cross Road on Wednesday afternoon.
The Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue said crews were called at approximately 1:25 p.m. on April 15 to a single-storey residence at 20845 Charing Cross Rd., with stations from Chatham, Raleigh South and Blenheim responding.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire conditions, with a portion of the roof already collapsed. Early information suggests the fire may have started in a vehicle parked close to the home before spreading to the structure. Strong easterly winds contributed to the rapid spread through the upper portion of the house.
Due to the condition of the building, crews focused on containing the fire from the exterior.
All occupants were able to exit the home safely and no injuries were reported.
Nearby structures and vehicles were at risk, including a neighbouring house, a detached garage and several vehicles on the property. Crews worked to protect those exposures and prevent the fire from spreading further.
Downed power lines were reported at the scene, and utility companies were notified. Police and paramedics also attended to assist and ensure public safety.
The home, described as a single-storey residence of approximately 2,000 square feet, sustained extensive damage, including collapse of the roof and ceiling.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
