Friends, family and community members are being invited to take part in a memorial day Saturday honouring the life of Herman Giethoorn.
Organizers say the May 16 gathering will provide an opportunity for those who knew Giethoorn, spent time with him or wish to honour his journey to come together in nature and reflect on his life.
“Herman’s family will be present throughout the day, offering space to connect and share memories,” organizers said in a statement.
The memorial events are centred around the themes Giethoorn valued most, including curiosity, patience, observation, photography and nature.
The day will begin with a morning gathering and walk at Peers Wetlands at 9:30 a.m., featuring a short gathering followed by a peaceful walk.
A midday memory space will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Crothers Park. Organizers said the drop-in gathering will include photographs and photography work, a memory book for attendees to share stories with the family and small keepsakes in remembrance. Pavilion access and washrooms will be available, and attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic.
The day will conclude with an afternoon reflection walk at Sycamore Woods beginning at 2 p.m. Organizers described the event as a quiet, self-guided walk for reflection and remembrance.
