Heat warning issued for Chatham-Kent as prolonged hot weather expected

A heat warning has been issued for Chatham-Kent, with Environment Canada forecasting a prolonged period of dangerous heat beginning Monday and lasting at least through Friday, with the possibility of continuing into the Canada Day weekend.

Environment Canada said daytime highs are expected to reach 31 to 33 C on Monday before climbing to between 33 and 36 C from Tuesday onward. Overnight lows are forecast to remain between 21 and 25 C, while Humidex values are expected to range from 40 to 44.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is urging residents to take precautions, noting that prolonged high temperatures and humidity can prevent the body from cooling properly and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Residents are encouraged to drink water regularly, seek air-conditioned spaces, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and check frequently on older adults, those living alone and others at greater risk.

Municipal centres and Chatham-Kent Public Library branches are available for residents looking to escape the heat during operating hours. Hope Haven, located at 183 Wellington St. W. in Chatham, is also serving as a cooling location daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Officials said heat stroke is a medical emergency. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as confusion, loss of consciousness or a high body temperature should call 911 immediately. Residents are also reminded never to leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.

The municipality added that anyone experiencing homelessness or lacking access to shelter, water or food can contact the Homeless Response Line at 519-354-6628 for assistance.
