The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is updating its Long-Term Financial Plan framework as it prepares for continued population growth and future infrastructure needs.
Municipal officials say the framework will guide long-term financial decision-making, infrastructure investments and the delivery of municipal services while helping ensure financial sustainability for future generations.
The updated framework is intended to help the municipality anticipate future infrastructure requirements rather than respond to issues as they arise. Officials say it will identify when roads, bridges, water systems, parks, buildings and other municipal assets are expected to require repair or replacement, allowing work to be completed in a planned and cost-effective manner.
The plan also outlines how those investments will be financed through a combination of reserves, investment income and responsible borrowing. The municipality says the approach is designed to protect municipal services, maximize the value of taxpayer dollars and support long-term financial stability.
“Chatham-Kent is experiencing incredible positive momentum,” Mayor Darrin Canniff said. “More families are choosing to call our community home, new businesses are investing here, and we’re seeing growth that creates opportunities across Chatham-Kent. This Long-Term Financial Plan ensures we’re prepared for that growth by making smart investments today that will benefit both current residents and future generations. It’s about protecting the services people rely on while building an even stronger, more resilient community for decades to come.”
The municipality said the updated framework builds on council’s existing financial planning efforts and will complement its Asset Management Plan and multi-year budgeting process.
Officials say those initiatives are intended to help guide future investments, support growth, maintain municipal infrastructure and ensure tax dollars continue to provide value for residents.
