Get focused on focus

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Life is full of opportunities and the myriad of directions those opportunities can take us.

What’s needed is focus.

The Chinese inventor and author, Lin Yutang, once said: “Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.”

That’s good advice.

In order to be able to eliminate non-essentials a definite focus needs to be in place.

Proverbs 29:18 puts it this way: “Without revelation people run wild, but one who follows divine instruction will be happy.”

People need a focus if they are to stay on track.

That’s why hiring a personal trainer to help you lose weight works better than going it alone.

The trainer will set goals that will refine focus.

It’s also why task forces are struck so that political and civic leaders can set budgets and complete necessary objectives.

Back in the fall of 2007 I was part of a group of 25 leaders in my community who spent two full days brainstorming and setting goals for where we wanted our town to be by the year 2020.

As I look back on that time and think of the many ideas that came forth I am amazed at how many have reached fruition.

None of this would have happened without a concerted effort to maintain focus.

So, what are those things in your life right now that absolutely need to get done?

What needs to be left undone?

What will you do to eliminate those non-essentials from your life?

Only you can make that decision!
