Dr. Graham Broad, an award-winning historian and professor at King’s University College at Western University, will headline the 81st Annual Banquet of the Rotary Club of Chatham on Nov. 8 at the Everest Convention Centre.
Broad, a top Canadian scholar in war and society studies and author of several books on culture in times of conflict, will appear in conversation with Jess Hungate, a Princeton and Harvard Law School graduate, lawyer, and avid historian. Together, they will discuss Broad’s recent publication, “Part of Life Itself: The War Diary of Leslie H. Miller, CEF.”
Miller’s war diary, kept by his family for over a century, documents his World War I experiences and early post-war reflections, offering unique insights into daily life on the Western Front. Broad, who recently edited the diary, will speak about his work on this project and how it reflects both historical and contemporary perspectives on conflict. Broad is also co-director of Wartime Canada, a digital archive of Canadian wartime memorabilia.
Hungate, a passionate arts advocate and longtime member of the Arts & Letters Club in Toronto, is noted for his insights into the intersections of history, policy, and finance.
“Chatham Rotary has always been fortunate to host internationally renowned keynote speakers for our Annual Banquet,” said Tania Sharpe, president of the Rotary Club of Chatham, in a media release.
“To have speakers of Graham and Jess’ caliber join us for our banquet is an honor, especially considering the important role Chatham-Kent residents played in World War I. I know they will give a timely and compelling talk leading into Remembrance Day.”
The banquet begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Everest Convention Centre, 250 National Road in Chatham. Tickets are $69.50, including a gourmet dinner and a silent auction. Proceeds will support Rotary’s charitable efforts locally and globally.
