Wallaceburg youth to be rewarded with ice cream for helmet safety

Children spotted wearing a helmet while biking, scootering, skateboarding or roller skating in Wallaceburg this summer may earn more than just safety points—they could score a free ice cream cone.

Throughout July and August, Chatham-Kent police officers will be handing out coupons for free ice cream, courtesy of The Sugar Shack and McDonald’s, to kids seen wearing helmets.

The initiative is part of a community campaign to promote safety and reward youth who follow Ontario’s helmet laws, which require anyone under 18 to wear a helmet while riding.

“It’s our way of saying thank you for protecting your head and following the rules,” police said in a release.

The program is supported by local partners The Sugar Shack and McDonald’s.
