Ontario Provincial Police are reminding motorists to remain alert for wildlife after a sport utility vehicle caught fire following a collision with a deer on Highway 401 near Hetherington Road in Chatham-Kent.
OPP responded to the single-vehicle collision at approximately 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401.
Police said the SUV struck a deer and subsequently caught fire. Members of Chatham-Kent Fire attended the scene.
No injuries were reported as a result of the collision.
One eastbound lane of the highway was closed for a short time while emergency crews responded.
Police are reminding drivers that looking further down the roadway can help improve reaction time when wild animals enter traffic lanes. “Looking further down the highway will open your field of view and allow you to respond more quickly to wild animals that cross.”
