The Municipality of Chatham-Kent says a spill within the Blenheim Wastewater Treatment Lagoon System has been contained and poses no risk to public safety.
In a release, the municipality said there is no impact to groundwater and that the spill remains confined within the wastewater treatment lagoon system.
“The spill has been contained within the wastewater treatment lagoon system and immediate steps are underway to contain, remove, and correct the issue,” the municipality said.
Officials said the discharge location has been identified and immediate action is being taken to address the problem.
The Public Utilities Commission is working with environmental consultants and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to complete the appropriate cleanup and corrective actions.
The municipality noted that a wastewater treatment lagoon is a large outdoor treatment system where wastewater is cleaned using natural processes, including sunlight, air and microorganisms, before being safely released into the environment.
“The Municipality will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available,” the release said.
