Chatham-Kent steps up enforcement of election sign bylaw amid complaints

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent says it is increasing enforcement of its election campaign sign bylaw following a rise in complaints through 311 about improperly placed signs.

The municipality says the bylaw, which has been in place since 2009, is intended to balance candidates’ ability to campaign with the need to keep roads and public spaces safe for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Officials say it has been applied consistently in past election cycles, with signs previously removed when rules were not followed.

“All candidates are provided with the bylaw information when they file their paperwork to run for an elected position,” the municipality said.

Under the rules, campaign signs may be placed on private property with the owner’s permission. On municipal public property, including boulevards, signs may only be installed starting Aug. 27, 2026. All signs must be removed no later than Oct. 31, 2026, five days after voting day.

The municipality says signs must not block visibility for road users, obstruct sidewalks, roads or driveways or create safety hazards. They are also prohibited in parks, on roadways, traffic islands or within visibility triangles at intersections.

Signs cannot be attached to utility poles, light poles, trees, traffic signs, bus shelters, benches, mailboxes, waste receptacles or other municipal infrastructure, nor can they be placed on property owned or occupied by the municipality or related local utilities.

All campaign signs must be maintained in good condition throughout the election period.

Municipal staff will continue to monitor signage during the campaign period and may remove non-compliant signs placed on municipal property before Aug. 27.

The municipality said removed signs are not destroyed and can be retrieved by candidates through the municipal election team.

Chatham-Kent thanked candidates and residents for helping ensure a safe, accessible and respectful election campaign.
