Ontario investing $12.75 million to combat hate crimes through security grant program

The Ontario government is investing $12.75 million through the Anti-Hate Security and Prevention Grant program to help faith-based and cultural organizations implement safety measures, including security guards, building upgrades and surveillance cameras.

“Everyone in Ontario deserves to feel safe when gathering to practice their faith, celebrate their culture and connect with their community,” said Graham McGregor, minister of citizenship and multiculturalism. “Through the expanded Anti-Hate Security and Prevention Grant program, our government is strengthening support for organizations facing threats of hate while investing in prevention and education to help protect the people and communities they serve.”

The program provides up to $10,000 to community organizations. This year, it has been expanded to two funding streams. The Security and Infrastructure stream continues to support physical upgrades, cybersecurity, training and short-term security measures, while the new Special Projects stream will support community-led initiatives focused on preventing hate, promoting education and raising awareness.

Eligible organizations include religious and spiritual organizations such as mosques, synagogues, temples and churches; First Nations, Inuit, Métis and urban Indigenous organizations; and community-serving organizations such as faith-based and cultural schools, child-care providers and social service organizations.

Since 2021, the province has invested more than $110 million to support more than 6,900 faith-based and cultural communities and organizations. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and are now open. Details are available at ontario.ca/AHSP.

The province has also allocated more than $2 million through the 2024-2026 Safer and Vital Communities Grant program to help 15 community-based not-for-profit organizations and First Nations chiefs and band councils with projects focused on preventing hate crimes.
