Does the idea of getting a tattoo entice you?

But does the process for actually selecting what tattoo to get leave you stumped?

Well, the crew at Madness Ink in Chatham can help.

We sat down with the founder of Madness Ink, Keith Smith and former Wallaceburg resident Neil Malcolm for an interview about: How to choose a tattoo?

SC: What should people do when deciding what tattoo to get?

Neil: The first question you have to ask yourself is why are you getting the tattoo… that is definitely a huge thing. Is it to commemorate somebody, maybe somebody you have lost, or someone who is still alive, maybe your kids.

The most common reason is aesthetically, they look really cool.

If people see them a lot and they like how they look… a lot of times they don’t know how to go about that. The biggest mistake people make is maybe they see somebody on TV that has a tattoo and they want to go get that tattoo because they want to look just like that, that’s sometimes not the best way to go. That really doesn’t mean much to you as far as the image goes. I think you really need to hone into soemthing personal to yourself and start with that.

The next thing is to talk to your artist. They do that everyday and they are going to come up with ideas that are going to tyranslate better as a tattoo.

Keith: An artists mind works different than other people’s minds sometimes. If somebody comes in and talks to us about a tattoo and they give us three or four ideas for it… we can see it in our head before we put it to paper. Now I can describe it to that person and let them see it in their own mind.

SC: You mentioned that communicating and trusting your artist is key as well?

Keith: We’ve been doing this for quite a while. We’ve seen it all, we’ve done it all. Let us put our two cents in. We know it’s soemthing they have to live with the rest of their lives but we can maybe help them ease it into their lives by maybe making it a bit softer and not so much, bang in your face huge tattoo right off that bat.
