Environment Canada currently has a severe thunderstorm watch in effect, but officials say more “dangerous” weather is possible today, June 17.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada officials said in a statement issued at 2:23 p.m. “There is also a risk of a tornado.”

Officials say the threat of severe thunderstorms exists until this evening.

“Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury,” Environment Canada officials said. “Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.”

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

A tornado watch has been issued in Ontario for Grey-Bruce, Barrie, Orillia, Dufferin-Innisfil, Halton-Peel, York-Durham, Waterloo-Wellington.
