Wallaceburg Memorial Arena opens, hockey resumes with COVID-19 protocols in place

The 2020/2021 hockey season in Wallaceburg is officially under way, and the doors to Wallaceburg Memorial Arena are officially open.

The Wallaceburg Minor Hockey Association (WMHA) shared some photos on social media on Friday night, October 2, 2020, highlighting the first on-ice action of the season.

“Welcome Back Lakers!” the organization posted on Facebook

WMHA officials say their board have been working overtime the last eight weeks to make their return to play a success.

“After working with the OMHA, OHF, OWHA, local Public Health Unit and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, we have a solid framework in place that allows us to hit the ice October 2,” WMHA posted on their website.

“Hockey will look different in 2020. Our goal is to move forward in the stages and towards more familiar five-on-five hockey. In order to accomplish this goal, we need everyone – players, coaches, parents and guardians – to follow all COVID-19 protocols.”

WMHA officials added they have assigned a board member to be their COVID Officer.

“Kristine Moninger has volunteered to spearhead all COVID related questions and concerns,” WMHA officials say.

“To make our return to play successful, we can’t stress enough the importance of adhering to all protocols.”

More details have been posted on the WMHA website, here.
