Ice plug on the St. Clair River leads to extended flood watch

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) has extended a flood watch, as an ice plug remains on the St. Clair River.

SCRCA officials say there is potential for shoreline erosion and minor flooding and strong winds and freezing spray is expected.

“The St. Clair River is continuing to experience an ice plug from its southern reach to north of Sombra,” SCRCA official say.

“Gale-force winds and freezing spray over Lake Huron, and strong winds over Lake St. Clair, have temporarily suspended ice breaking efforts due to unsafe conditions; efforts are anticipated to resume once conditions have improved. Residents along the St. Clair River may experience possible shoreline erosion and minor flooding as a result of the ice plug.”

SCRCA officials added: “Southwesterly winds gusting between 60-70 km/h over Lake St. Clair (were) anticipated to continue into (Friday) evening, becoming 50-60 km/h early overnight and continuing into Saturday evening when winds are forecasted to subside. These strong southerly winds have the potential to stack lake ice near the shoreline. Residents along the Lake St. Clair shoreline may experience shoreline erosion.”

Residents are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous ice conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water.

Children and pets should be kept away from the water, SCRCA officials added.

“The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise,” SCRCA officials added.

“Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.”

This flood watch will remain in effect until Sunday, February 7, 2021, unless otherwise updated.
