Northern Collegiate high school closed in Sarnia due to ‘disturbing message’

Sarnia Police Service officials allege that on June 8, 2022 Sarnia Police were called to Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School (NCIVS) located at 940 Michigan Avenue in the City of Sarnia regarding a disturbing message located on the school property.

In consultation with Senior Administration at Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) a decision was made to close the school and move staff and students to remote learning for Thursday June 9, 2022.

A sports banquet scheduled to take place at the school on today’s date has been cancelled.

Incidents such as this are taken very seriously and the safety of staff and students is a priority.

The disturbing message was specific to Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School and there are no concerns for the safety of staff and students at other schools in the area.

This matter is an active investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to call the investigating officer Constable VanCowenberg at 519-344-8861 extension 6212 or Sarnia Lambton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

“Student and staff safety are a top priority for the LKDSB and we work with local police to determine the appropriate actions to ensure school safety,” said Director of Education John Howitt, in a media release.

The LKDSB will continue to keep the school community updated regarding this issue, school board officials say.

Please visit the school or LKDSB websites for the most up-to-date information.
