Sewer upgrades will limits special events in Tecumseh Park for 2023

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent Is upgrading the sewer separation on the streets surrounding Tecumseh Park in Chatham in 2023; which is creating limited access for events in the park resulting in some events being relocated or rescheduled.

Phase 1 of the Tecumseh Park Area Sewer Separation will involve the following streets: Stanley Avenue from the Thames River to William Street North, William Street North from Stanley Avenue to Colborne Street, and Colborne Street from William Street North to Adelaide Street North.

The Reconstruction will include the following work:

– Replace existing watermain, water services and appurtenances.

– Abandon and remove existing combined sewer, maintenance holes and services.

– Replace existing sanitary sewer, maintenance holes and services.

– Install new storm sewer, maintenance holes, services and catch basins.

– Reconstruction of the asphalt road and granular base.

– Replace existing concrete curb and gutter and sidewalks.

– Boulevard restoration.

“The Municipality expects the construction project will temporary relocate approximately 10 special events that are held in Tecumseh Park for the year of 2023,” Municipal officials said in a media release.

“The project expected timeline is from June 1st to December 31st of 2023.”

Parks, Recreation & Cemeteries that oversees special events will be working with the Engineering and Public Works divisions to try to accommodate smaller events that take place in the park by creating access points around the construction or will be working with the event organizers to relocate and/or reschedule these events, Municipal officials say.

Larger events will not be permitted in the park as the access points would not be sufficient to allow for the larger equipment and materials that is brought in for these events.

The report to council about the Phase 1 Tecumseh Park Area Sewer Separation was brought to council and the PUC Commission in March of 2022 to award the engineering services for this project.

The Report outlined the scope of work, the location, and the timeframe in which the construction would take place.
