Update: Winter storm warning in place across Chatham-Kent

A winter storm warning has been issued in Chatham-Kent, as hazardous winter conditions are expected.

This winter storm warning has been upgraded from a winter weather travel advisory that was previously in effect, Environment Canada officials said at 6:41 p.m.

Hazards, include:

– Significantly reduced visibility due to heavy snow.

– Total snowfall accumulations near 15 cm, particularly inland from Lake Erie.

– Snowfall rates up to 4 cm/h possible this evening.

– Wind gusts up to 90 km/h possible this evening.

– Rapidly accumulating snowfall creating hazardous travel conditions.

– Isolated power outages possible.

The timing of the storm is Friday evening through to early Saturday morning.

“Latest analysis suggests more snow than rainfall for portions of southwestern Ontario inland from Lake Erie,” forecasters say.

“Heavy snow in combination with strong easterly winds gusting up to 90 km/h will create reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions. Snow may mix with ice pellets at times or even transition over to rain, particularly for areas closer to Lake Erie. Areas that change over to rain may see significant rainfall accumulations, but any rain should change back to snow later this evening.”

Forecasters added: “Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”
