Arson and indecent act charges laid in Chatham

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man after a fire damaged a ground-floor unit on Churchill Park Road in Chatham on Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called at 8:47 a.m. and arrived to find a shattered patio door and signs the fire had started in patio furniture. Firefighters confirmed the blaze was out when they arrived and said no alarms had been activated.

Witnesses told police a man had been seen defecating on the patio shortly before the incident. Officers reviewed surveillance video from the area and identified a suspect.

A 46-year-old Chatham-Kent man was arrested at 9:34 a.m. He is charged with arson and committing an indecent act. He was taken to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
