Police warn public after cryptocurrency fraud in Orford Township

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Chatham-Kent Police are investigating a reported cryptocurrency fraud in Orford Township.

Police say officers responded at approximately 1:09 p.m. on Dec. 21, 2025, after a 70-year-old woman reported being defrauded. The victim told police she had been contacted by a man she met on Instagram about three weeks earlier, who claimed he was returning from a military contract and requested financial assistance.

Police say the woman was persuaded to send funds using Bitcoin. She later lost contact with the individual and discovered the screenshots and contact information provided were fraudulent. Chatham-Kent Police are reminding the public to be cautious of online requests for money or cryptocurrency, particularly during the holiday season.
