Rain and thunderstorms prompt flood outlook notice across St. Clair region

St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook for April 14 to 20, warning that multiple rounds of rain and thunderstorms could significantly raise water levels across the region.

According to the advisory, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Surface Water Monitoring Centre are forecasting several rounds of rain beginning Tuesday and continuing through Thursday, with expected rainfall totals between 40 and 70 mm. Additional thunderstorm activity could bring up to 60 mm more, though officials note totals remain highly uncertain, particularly with storm-driven rainfall.

“Thunderstorms are highly unpredictable and can hit some areas harder than others, resulting in higher local rainfall amounts,” the statement said. “High amounts of rain in a short period of time may lead to flash flooding and pooling on roads, especially in more urban areas.”

Officials warn that already saturated ground conditions will limit absorption, causing rainfall to quickly run off into local watercourses. Smaller waterways may overflow into low-lying areas that are prone to spring flooding, while water levels remain slightly elevated following last week’s high water event.

SCRCA says water levels could rise quickly if rainfall reaches the higher end of the forecast.

Municipal staff are being advised to closely monitor local conditions, particularly in known drainage problem areas.

Residents are also being urged to stay away from watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, including slippery banks and cold, fast-moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from affected areas.

The conservation authority said it will continue to monitor watershed conditions and will issue further advisories to municipalities and media if flooding concerns develop. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents are also encouraged to monitor conditions closely.

The statement remains in effect until 12 p.m. on April 20, 2026, unless updated.
