OPP says police record check turnaround times improving

The Ontario Provincial Police says processing times for online police record checks have improved significantly, with current turnaround averaging about 10 days.

The update follows a backlog in the summer and fall of 2025, when wait times had reached between 12 and 14 weeks.

Police say they conducted a full review of the Online Police Record Checks Unit, including an internal audit, policy updates and the addition of resources to meet demand.

The OPP’s service standard is to complete record checks within 30 days, though officials note processing times may increase during peak periods.

Police say turnaround times are posted weekly on the application website and that local detachments do not process applications.

“We recognize the impacts delays can have on those we serve. The OPP is committed to providing effective, professional service to our communities, and I am pleased with the great work of the Online Police Records Check Unit to improve turnaround times for police record checks,” said Chief Supt. Brad McCallum, commander of the crime prevention and community support bureau.

The OPP says it will continue monitoring demand and adjusting resources to maintain timely service.
