Residents planning to enjoy campfires this season are being reminded to know the difference between approved and non-approved burning devices in Chatham-Kent.
Officials say campfires in non-approved burning devices such as fire pits or fire rings require a Recreational Campfire Permit. However, small controlled fires contained within an approved burning device do not require a permit.
Approved burning devices must be made from pottery, metal or masonry, and have a firebox no larger than 60 centimetres (24 inches) in diameter. They must also include an enclosed hearth with a 6 mm (¼ inch) mesh screen covering the top, or be fully enclosed on all sides with a mesh screen covering the top.
Residents are being reminded to only burn clean, dry wood, charcoal or briquettes and to keep all fires properly controlled.
More information on permits and requirements is available through the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, here.
