Update: SIU continues to investigate Wallaceburg standoff

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding an interaction between Chatham-Kent Police Service officers and a 65-year-old man during a standoff in Wallaceburg over the weekend.

According to the SIU, the incident began around 2 a.m. on October 11 when officers attended a residence in the area of Murray Street and King Street to investigate a domestic incident. Upon arrival, police learned that a man had barricaded himself inside the home and was in possession of knives. Everyone else inside was evacuated.

After roughly 13 hours, officers entered the residence. The SIU said the man harmed himself with a knife in front of the officers, and to prevent him from further injury, three officers discharged their conducted energy weapons. The man was transported to hospital for treatment.

The SIU has assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators to the case. One subject official and five witness officials have been designated.

Chatham-Kent Police confirmed that officers were called to a residence on Wallace Street at about 2 a.m. after reports of a man threatening people with a weapon. Police said the area was secured and the Emergency Response Team was called in. Negotiations continued for several hours before the man was taken into custody around 3 p.m.

Police said the man sustained an injury during the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment. Because the injury occurred during an interaction with officers, the SIU invoked its mandate.

Chatham-Kent Police said they will not be providing further information while the SIU investigation is ongoing.
