School bus safety blitz conducted

Bus-Safety-Initiative-Sept-2016

Yesterday, members of the Chatham-Kent Police Traffic Management Section with the assistance of Chatham-Kent OPP conducted a School Bus safety blitz throughout the Municipality.

Officers were strategically placed on school buses during morning and afternoon routes to observe motorists’ actions around stopped school buses.

Thankfully, no one was observed disobeying any school bus signals while children were getting on or off a bus. A few motorists were however reminded that driving requires their full attention.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to remind motorists that these types of road safety initiatives will continue throughout the school year as the safety of our children are a priority.

All drivers are reminded that they must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights and stop arm flashing, regardless of the speed limit or number of lanes. Motorists failing to comply may be issued a $490 fine and six demerit points.

Please also reduce your speed in the area of cross walks and school zones.
